It's quite an experience going to the Mountains of New Mexico from Kansas. You first need to cross Appalacian Mountains which are relatively easy to conquer. Relatively 200 miles are covered per day. You loose so much of weight when going for such adventures. You literally become thin and lean in doing this. You cannot always drive at high speed. You need to slow down a bit. You may pay someone to drive at night but this won't help you much. It's a long journey so you need to be physically and mentally fit. Traffic is not much. You will be lucky if you don't get too much of wind because wind usually blows in opposite direction here and can cause a lot of problem. The road from Kansas is not a smooth ride. It is bumpy can thus traveling on it becomes difficult. You need to follow highway 54 when you drive out of Kansas. Highway 54 is actually pretty good. There is the Northeastward bend after going 35 miles. After this bend you need to move straight. You get to meet wonderful people in Oklahoma State which lies in the middle of the journey. People are just so wonderful here. People offer you water and food. After covering the next 40 files, you are no the Hwy 56. From here you need to turn diagonal and left for New Mexico. Then there is a long Oklahoma Pan Handle. Boise city comes next and that is just 20 miles away from the New Mexico border. You feel wonderful the moment you see Clayton, NM signboard. There is also the board of no services to Springer which means it's a do or die situation. Springer is the usual night halt. The journey of US on bicycles is of course a very long one. |
